Any Unschoolers ? 12th International Rethinking Education Conference
Our entire Family attended an Incredible Unschool conference last weekend. This was our 1st time attending and we are not going to miss another one.There were families from all over the country and beyond. There were a few families of color that attended. A few have been attending for years. One family has been traveling from Chicago for 5 years. I finally talked my husband into attending . He did not understand the unschool concept at all. Frequent discussions in our home. After this weekend he gets it now. Monday after it was all over he Thanked me for making him go. Yeaaaaa !!!
If you are an unschooler and you would like to see other unschoolers in action or you are curious, you should really consider coming next year. It is always in Dallas, Texas at a hotel. We were at a Westin this year. The Conference had 100 % of the Hotels meeting space. Our kiddos 9, 6 & 3 kids had a blast. We all did. My husband and I went to classes that were 1-2hr and did not have to worry about them, because they had so much to do.. We sat in on a kids panel and learned how the 6-16 yo felt about being unschooled. Then we sat in on a Young Adult-Adult age unschool Panel. We were amazed about how incredible theses grown unschoolers were. This changed my husbands mind!!! We learned that it might not be as bad as we thought to let our boys 6 & 9 play video games more often. We learned alot about our selves and how these incredible beings absorb the beauty in life.
My 9yo even hosted a session on how to build spy toys out of building toys. We hosted a session on how we have created our own business and are leading lives that we want to lead. It was called finding our own way.
The conference is well Organized and there were sessions to fit everyones interest. I encouraged my husband to sit in on the Dad's discussions and I was able to attend a Woman's Circles and Other things.

Kids had dress up rooms, game rooms, sewing projects, mechanical take apart and tons of activities.. My husband found my son playing chess and we didn't even know he knew how to play chess. There was even a Fencing session.
I tell you all this to say. We LOVED it and Hope to be able to spread the word to more Black family. There is a place where we can meet others that truly live our Lifestyle. Here is the link

Comment by Amber Trumbo on September 18, 2008 at 9:47pm - wow! what excitement is sounds wonderful. I am not at all sure what type of schooler I am we just love to learn. I will have to get some more info because it engaged me and I didn't even attend it!
